As we gather around grills, wave sparklers in the air, and marvel at fireworks lighting up the night sky, we’re reminded of the joy and pride that come with being American.
But here at the Kolbe Family Foundation, we know the 4th of July is more than a celebration—it’s a moment to reflect on the cost of our freedom and to honor those who paid it forward.

Freedom isn’t just a word—it’s a sacrifice.Behind every firework, parade, and anthem, there’s a veteran who raised their right hand and served. Some came home to parades, others to silence—or worse, hostility.
But every one of them deserves our respect, our gratitude, and our continued support.
Old Verses New 4th of July Traditions
OLD: Firing Cannons and Muskets
In the early days of American independence, it was common for towns to fire cannons or muskets to celebrate. These were ceremonial and symbolized the hard-won victory for freedom.
NEW: Red, White, and Blue Charcuterie Boards
Social media has inspired a wave of themed foods and tablescapes—like fruit platters shaped like American flags, or desserts made to match the holiday’s colors.

This year, we’re especially mindful of:
The last remaining WWII veterans, whose courage helped shape the modern world.
The often-forgotten Korean War veterans, who served in the "Forgotten War" and deserve to be remembered.
The Vietnam veterans, many of whom were denied a hero’s welcome. We say to them: Welcome home.

This 4th of July, we invite you to join us in celebrating freedom the meaningful way:
Thank a veteran—in person, with a message, or through a letter.
Support a cause that uplifts those who served.
Teach the next generation about the real meaning behind Independence Day.
Fly your flag proudly—in honor of those who defended it.

How to Make a Red, White, & Blue Charcuterie Board
Step 1: Choose Your Base
Use a large wooden board, a cutting board, a slate tray, or even a sheet pan if needed. If you're going for style points, a star-shaped or flag-shaped tray adds an extra wow factor.
Step 2: Gather Your Ingredients by Color
🔴 Red Ingredients:
Strawberries (halved), Raspberries, Red grapes, Cherry tomatoes, Red licorice or fruit leather, Red pepper slices, Salami or prosciutto
⚪ White Ingredients:
Cubed white cheddar or mozzarella balls, Goat cheese log or brie, Yogurt-covered pretzels or almonds, Popcorn, Cauliflower florets, Crackers (like water crackers or butter rounds), Mini marshmallows
🔵 Blue Ingredients:
Blueberries, Blackberries (dark enough to count), Blue corn tortilla chips, Blue cheese crumbles, Purple grapes or figs (if blueberries are scarce)
Step 3: Arrange Like a Flag (or Freestyle It!)
Option A: Flag Style:
Create horizontal rows of red, white, and blue ingredients.
Use a small square bowl in the top left corner filled with blueberries to mimic the stars section of the flag.
Lay red and white rows with alternating berries, cheeses, meats, and crackers.
Option B: Freestyle But Balanced:
Group like colors together in mini clusters for visual impact.
Place a variety of textures next to each other (e.g., soft cheeses beside crisp crackers or berries).
Use small ramekins for dips like white hummus, blue cheese dressing, or strawberry preserves.
Step 4: Garnish and Finish:
Add mini American flags or patriotic toothpicks.
Use rosemary sprigs or mint leaves for a pop of green (optional, but festive).
Sprinkle edible stars or glitter for fun!
Step 5: Serve and Celebrate:
Pair with lemonade, sparkling water, or a festive mocktail (like a berry spritzer). Take a photo—it’s Instagram-worthy! Then gather your crew and enjoy.
From our family to yours—Happy Independence Day. May your celebrations be filled with laughter, love, and a deep sense of gratitude.
With heartfelt thanks,
Kolbe Family
