While Memorial Day often marks the start of summer—gatherings, beach trips, and backyard barbecues—it is, above all, a day of solemn remembrance.

It is a day to pause, reflect, and honor those Americans who served our country and paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

This Memorial Day, we pause not simply to mark the passage of time, but to remember—with full hearts—those who gave everything for the freedoms we hold dear.

Their names may not all be known to us, but their sacrifice echoes through every flag raised, every moment of silence, and every breath of liberty we take.

"They gave their tomorrows for our todays.

And in their silence, we hear the price of freedom."

From the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of Afghanistan, brave Americans have laid down their lives so others could stand.

Private First Class Harold Christ Agerholm – World War II

On the island of Saipan in 1944, Agerholm ran into active enemy fire with a stretcher and personally evacuated 45 wounded Marines. While attempting to save more, he was fatally shot. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

He was 19 years old.

1st Lt. Sharon Lane - Vietnam War

A United States Army nurse who was killed by a rocket explosion on June 8, 1969, while serving at the 312th Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam. She was the only American military woman killed as a direct result of enemy fire in the Vietnam War.

Lane was awarded several medals for her service, including the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star with "V" device, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Order of Vietnam Medal, and the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross (with Palm).

She was buried with full military honors at Sunset Hills Burial Park in Canton, Ohio.

Corporal Jason L. Dunham – Iraq War

In 2004, while on patrol in Husaybah, Cpl. Dunham threw himself on a live grenade to shield his fellow Marines. He succumbed to his injuries days later. His actions saved the lives of those around him.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.

Their courage spans centuries. Their sacrifice transcends generations. Their stories live on not only in the annals of history—but in the freedom we live every day.

At the Kolbe Family Foundation, we carry their legacy forward by serving the veterans and families who bear the invisible weight of war.

On this solemn day, we ask you to pause—to remember, to reflect, and if you feel called, to give. Let us never forget the price of peace or those who paid it.

With reverence and resolve,

The Kolbe Family Foundation
